If you’re against the Iraq War, you’ve been brainwashed by the terrorists

September 29th, 2006

At least, that’s the latest proclamation from our president.

President Bush asserted Friday that critics who claim the Iraq war has made America less safe embrace “the enemy’s propaganda.”

So now, not only does Bush insinuate that Iraq supported the terrorists, but that any critic of the war on Iraq also supports terrorists. Trying to justify his war through lies is bad enough, but to suggest that his critics harbor terrorist sympathies goes well beyond too far.

What else can you do when you’ve just released a government document that purports an increase in terrorist recruiting thanks to the war? Here’s a suggestion: admit the mistake. If not that, then he at least ought to apologize for today’s statement. To associate criticism with treason flies in the face of all that is moral, and he should be ashamed.

Greetings from San Diego!

September 28th, 2006

We’re having a great time so far, and today we visited the San Diego Zoo:

Here’s a picture of us this morning outside.

I see my brothers are doing a fine job with the blogging, talk to you soon!

Torture Bill Passes Senate

September 28th, 2006

This is just sad. It’s also what a slippery slope looks like. In addition to destroying the last bit of moral standing we had in the world, it will also lead to torture of Americans in the future. In fact, here’s a few ways how:

-Many US Soldiers (not just special forces) are required to have a pair of “sterile” BDU’s, which are worn when operating in sketchy border areas or overtly in hostile countries
-Even if US troops are wearing proper uniform, what’s to stop troops from another country (say, Syria) from simply going across the border and grabbing a couple of our guys, then saying they “were acting unlawfully”
-A US Soldier captured in civilian clothes while on vacation or off-base is transported to a very hostile country (almost like rendition) where a confession is tortured out of him, he is put on trial with secret evidence, and executed

And those are just a few of the obvious perils to the military. The fact that we will soon have suspended habeus corpus with no court review sounds an awful lot like something we fought against for 40 years. You know, that thing called communism.

The Big Lie

September 28th, 2006

Our Enemies Have Not Succeeded In Launching Another Attack On Our Soil,

Oh really! Assuming Bush has read a newspaper or listened to a newsbroadcast in the past few years, this is the biggest lie ever told, and sadly accepted without question. A quick perousal of major headlines in the past few years tells a different story.

Officials look for tie between terrorists, anthrax- October 9, 2001

They stopped looking, by the way

Syrians fight off attack on U.S. Embassy, September 12, 2006

Drive-By Shooting at a U.S. Consulate, January 22, 2002

Hmm, well, I guess if you disregard the fact that the anthrax attacks, and the fact that American embassies are technically American soil, Bush could almost be telling the truth.
However, let’s look at some other headlines I’m certain you didn’t see:

Over 1,000 lbs of explosives stolen in Virginia

An improvised explosive device (IED) detonates at a train station in Illinois

A drug raid in Texas yields over a dozen weapons and improvised explosive devices

A man attempted a suicide incendiary attack at a womens center in Iowa

A Californian discovers a pair of IEDs under his car, as well as one in his residence

These incidents all have on thing in common: they all occurred THIS MONTH! And this is just a random sampling. Because of Iraq, IEDs are becoming more frequent and more sophisticated. The theft of explosives in large quantities (hundreds of pounds) is now a bi-weekly affair, because there isn’t standardized security criteria that is effective. Hell, I can literally buy ready to use (just mix) explosives off the internet for $70. If I add a little bit of aluminum powder, the resulting mixture is cap sensitive and more powerful than TNT :(

I place the blame squarely on Bush and Co. The reason is simple, they have done as little as possible to secure the homeland. Agencies can’t talk to each other (which is huge!), federal laws on the purchase and storage of explosives and hazardous materials is crap, and the one institution that can quickly respond to a major attack (the military) is either overseas or left with no equipment. I mean, I’m not even asking them to spend a lot of money to most of this stuff. A lot of it is simply hammering out laws, and codifying agreements.
Unfortunately, these are all things that must be dictated from the top down. And until Congress spends more time on the floor and less on the fundraising circuit, even simple paperwork is too much to hope for.

Chinese testing lasers on American satellites

September 28th, 2006

Dan doesn’t get much into international politics on this site (other than Iraq, of course), but this bears mentioning.

The Chinese military has secretly targeted American satellites with lasers to disable their surveillance capabilities. I often wonder why more attention isn’t paid to the growing threat that the Chinese pose to U.S. security and economic interests. Iraq, Iran, North Korea… combined they are nothing next to the potential foe that exists in the land of 1.4 billion people. If there is any world power capable of mounting a serious challenge to the United States in the next 20 years, it is China. As to whether China is willing to do so, there a bit of circumstantial evidence that says yes.

It is reported that the Bush administration has known that this was occurring for a few years. It was kept secret, however, in the hopes that China could be persuaded to join us the wars of the Middle East. Keeping this activity a secret can only embolden the Chinese government.

Decision to declassify turns into another Bush blunder

September 27th, 2006

President Bush told us that the declassified NIE report would cure us of our naivete and set the record straight on Iraq’s role in global jihadism. Survey says…

The Iraq conflict has become the “cause celebre” for jihadists, breeding a deep resentment of US involvement in the Muslim world and cultivating supporters for the global jihadist movement. BBC

So we’ve got that going for us. Which is nice.

The report does go on to suggest that victory in Iraq would seriously harm the jihadist movement. Bush will point this out as support for his policies. If we don’t “stay the course” we will only make matters worse. What he will forget to mention is that this all would have been a moot point if we’d never gone into Iraq in the first place. We wouldn’t be stuck in this catch-22 if the Bush administration hadn’t waged an all-out war of lies to “persuade” the people to accept its war.

In other news:

Congresswoman Jane Harman said there was a second NIE focused purely on Iraq.

“I hear it paints a grim picture,” she said. “And because it does, I am told it is being held until after the November elections.” BBC

Can’t wait to see just how naive Ms. Harman is, believing that Iraq could ever be described as grim.

Bush Administration Blocks Truth on Global Warming

September 26th, 2006

I should make this the week of “Lack of surprise weblog entries”:

The Bush administration has blocked release of a report that suggests global warming is contributing to the frequency and strength of hurricanes, the journal Nature reported Tuesday. – AP

This is just another in a series of attempts to block the truth from getting out by this administration. Whether it was blocking the 9/11 commission, blocking the public’s right to know if big oil executives drafted our energy policy, blocking intelligence reports critical of the administration, blocking the truth on WMDs, or blocking the truth about global warming, this administration has made it clear that no matter what it’s doing, it doesn’t want the people who pay the bills to find out.

Judge Agrees that Rep. Mark Green’s PAC Money was Illegal

September 26th, 2006

Just in case you didn’t hear about this – and if you get the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, chances are you didn’t – a Dane County judge has ruled that Rep. Mark Green has $467,000 in illegal special interest money in his campaign, and he broke the law.

Judging from past experience, the Green campaign defense will probably run something like this: “The partisan judge is the real criminal here, and this only proves that Jim Doyle is corrupt and up is in fact down.

It’s sad and predictable, and also a good indication of what kind of leader Mark Green would be. It’s always everyone else’s fault, never his own.

US Intelligence Community Agrees: Iraq War Has Increased Terrorist Threat

September 25th, 2006

…Not lessened it as Pres. Bush and others have been saying for the past three years!

I’ve also been saying it for years: The Iraqi war has made us less safe against terrorism and created tens of thousands of new terrorists who want nothing more than to hurt the US. According to a leaked National Intelligence Estimate, which is basically the consensus of the entire intelligence aparatus in the US, I’ve been right all along.

Go check it out for yourself.

Expect the President to deal with the reports findings by making the issue about who leaked the report instead of the contents of the report itself.

Journal Sentinel Website Problems?

September 22nd, 2006

Is it just me or is anyone else noticing serious flakiness lately with the Journal Sentinel website, jsonline.com? It seems like every other page takes a few minutes to load if it does at all.

Maybe they put Paddy Mac in charge of the servers and he’s blocking “angry liberal bloggers”?

Seven Thousand Iraqi’s Killed in the Last Two Months

September 22nd, 2006

You might be surprised to hear that nearly 7,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed (many of them tortured and executed) in the past two months.

The American media is bored with Iraq so they’re not reporting on it anymore. And it looks bad for Republicans to boot, which they don’t want either. Even when over 100 people a day are being killed, tortured, and executed, you have to go to a British paper to read about it.

Nearly 7,000 civilians were killed in Iraq in the past two months, according to a UN report just released – a record high that is far greater than initial estimates had suggested.

Just remember that our President thinks that things continue to go just peachy over there.
