Democrats Do Good By Passing Health Coverage Bill for Low Income Kids

January 30th, 2009

This always seemed like a no brainer for me, but Democrats are finally able to move a bill that would provide millions of uninsured kids with more comprehensive health coverage.

The Democratic-controlled Congress moved a step closer to handing President Barack Obama an early health care victory Thursday as the Senate passed a bill extending government-sponsored health insurance coverage to about 4 million uninsured children.

The bill, which was approved 66-32, authorizes an additional $32.8 billion over the next 4 1/2 years for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program. The House plans to take up the same measure next week. – AP

Milwaukee County Exec Scott Walker Flip Flops on Federal Aid

January 30th, 2009

As predicted, Scott Walker is now OK with some federal stimulus aid, as long as it adhears to an “old formula”. Good to know. How’s that for princples?!

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker said today he’d welcome an infusion of federal stimulus aid for transit, despite his refusal to actively seek any of the aid.

Walker  drew a distinction between the transit aid, which would be funneled through existing transit programs, and other types of stimulus funding he’s rejecting. He said he had no objection to the transit funding because it would be distributed through an old formula. – jsonline.com

I’m looking forward to all my right wing talk show host friends dedicating as much time to talking about County Exec. Walker’s new definition of “principles” as they did his old definition of “principles” a few weeks ago.

Good News: I’ve Joined the Board of Directors of The Park People

January 29th, 2009

I posted something a bit earlier about this on twitter, but thought I’d follow it up with something a bit more substantive after a few people asked…

I’m very excited and honored to join the Board of Directors for The Park People of Milwaukee County.

I’ve been a vocal advocate for the wonderful park system we have here in Milwaukee County for a long time now and am really looking forward to continuing that advocacy in a more official role as a Director of the Park People.

As many people know, Milwaukee County  used to be one of, if not the, top park systems in the Country. Unfortunately that isn’t the case anymore, but I look forward to continuing to work through the Park People and with the 50+ “Friends of” citizen park groups throughout the County to make sure our public spaces enhance the quality of life for generations to come.

Maybe a Simple Question: How Does Cutting Payroll Tax Help Those Without a Job?

January 29th, 2009

Can anyone, maybe even a conservative who may back this idea, explain to me how cutting the payroll tax is going to in any way create jobs or benefit the growing number of people who are now unemployed?

Anyone? Maybe it’s a simple question and I’m missing something, but everyone from Scott Walker to Paul Ryan is saying the “real” answer to the economic crisis is to cut the payroll tax. How does that in any way help either the person who no longer has a job and hence no payroll tax to cut, or the business that is no longer paying a payroll tax on the employee it just laid off?

You Might Be Surprised at Who’s Taking Right Wing Radio Talk Show Hosts to Task

January 28th, 2009

I’ve made the same point many times over, but it’s always good to hear it coming from elected officials as well:

“I mean, it’s easy if you’re Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh or even sometimes Newt Gingrich to stand back and throw bricks. You don’t have to try to do what’s best for your people and your party.

You know you’re just on these talk shows and you’re living well and plus you stir up a bit of controversy and gin the base and that sort of that thing. But when it comes to true leadership, not that these people couldn’t be or wouldn’t be good leaders, they’re not in that position of John Boehner or Mitch McConnell.”

You might be surprised who it was that said that about right wing talk radio show hosts though: Republican Congressman Phil Gingrey from Georgia. One of, if not the most, conservative members of the House. And he’s right of course.

It’s easy to sit back and play Monday morning quarterback or smear people from the safety of a microphone with a mute switch ready to go in case an opinion that challenges your own happens to make it past your call screener. It’s not as easy to actually be a leader and recognize that not everything fits into a convenient “black” or “white” box.

Good to see that calling out over the top rhetoric coming from the AM radio dial isn’t a Republican or Democratic thing to do…

Progress Made on Keeping Our Tax Dollars Working in Wisconsin

January 28th, 2009

The Wisconsin State Assembly took a positive step forward today to make sure that when the State puts out a bid for services, materials, etc… it tries to get them from companies here in Wisconsin first.

The state Department of Administration and local governments to try to buy at least 20% of materials, supplies and services from Wisconsin vendors. The bill also would require that in each fiscal year, the percentage of the total amount spent on Wisconsin-based businesses not be lower than in the past fiscal year.

The bill passed 77-22.

This is encouraging because it can make sure that when our tax dollars are being spent, they’re helping to create jobs and keeping our local economy strong.

Last month, I hightlighted the fact that the Government Accountability Board shipped a million dollars worth of work for a web site off to the East coast. While the amount of money spent is something that needs to be questioned, it only makes sense that work like this should stay with one of Wisconsins many qualified firms.

On that subject, a few people have asked about the status of my open records request to the Government Accountability Board regarding that million dollar web site. The “reasonable” time limit for them to respond is drawing near and I’ve formally asked for an update about my request.

Should have something shortly and will post an update when I get it.

Free Market Think Tank: Scott Walker Stimulus Stunt “Wrongheaded”

January 27th, 2009

The Wisconsin Policy Research Institute applauds County Executive Scott Walker for taking “a political risk” by refusing federal stimulus money for Milwaukee County, but like myself, disagree with his “tax cuts are the only answer” reasoning.`

Walker, however, has his own idea for stimulating economic growth: tax cuts. Unfortunately, this prescription is wrongheaded on several different levels.

First, consumers and businesses are sitting on their money because they are uncertain about the future. Putting (or, more accurately, leaving) more money in their pockets is unlikely to address that uncertainty.

The entire piece is here. It’s a interesting piece from a generally conservative group and should also be applauded for calling it like they see it, regardless of politics.

Media Still Lapping up Whatever GOP Feeds It

January 24th, 2009

The more things change, the more they stay the same…

This week, congressional Republicans seized on a new report from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) showing the limited short-term stimulative effects of the Democrats’ proposed rescue package. It’s also led to widespread media coverage undermining the White House’s arguments about the benefits of a stimulus plan.

There is, however, a problem. The CBO report, as it’s been described, doesn’t exist.

Reports of a recent study by the Congressional Budget Office, showing that the vast majority of the money in the stimulus package won’t be spent until after 2010, have Democrats on the defensive and the GOP calling for a pullback in wasteful spending.

Funny thing is, there is no such report.

“We did not issue any report, any analysis or any study,” a CBO aide told the Huffington Post.

Scott Walker Wrong on Simplistic “One Size Fits All” Solution to More Job Cuts in Milwaukee

January 23rd, 2009

First off the bad news. Milwaukee’s own Harley-Davidson is cutting over 1,000 jobs. No word yet on who will be cut or from where.  The economic downturn affecting the entire Country needs immediate action, not just to save the fat cats or the investment firms on Wall Street, but to stimulate the entire economy through a “rising tide that will raise all boats”.

Getting people out of the unemployment line and back to the assembly line is what is going to get us out of this mess and get those motorcycles moving again.

So there’s a pragmatic and serious view of what needs to be done to create jobs, and then there’s Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker who see’s an opportunity to push out a press release and hit the conservative talk radio shows to make sure everyone knows he has a plan to create jobs in Milwaukee and get the economy back on track!

Tax cuts.

Yes, tax cuts are what could get those 1,100 folks back to work according to Walker.

If his ‘solution’ sounds familiar, well, that’s because you’ve heard it before from County Exec. Walker. He has a simplistic solution to every problem this City, County, State and Country face or will ever face. Tax cuts!

Stock market tumbling? Tax cuts! Economy in the tank? Tax cuts! People losing jobs? Tax cuts! Bridges falling apart? Tax cuts!

I’d make a reference here to nails and hammers, but I think you get the point. No matter what the problem may be, our County Executive sees a tax cut as the solution.

While his remedy is entirely predictable, it’s not completely practical.

After all, didn’t we have a massive handout of cash just last spring? Those $600 or $1200 checks to every tax payer didn’t seem to help out the economy much then, so why would cutting the payroll tax, which is one of Scott Walkers proposals, fare any better?  If a huge infusion of cash didn’t help, why would a few dollars a month make a difference?

Not to mention that payroll or FICA taxes pay for critical services like MEDICARE and social security, two programs which are more critical than ever in these hard times. Unemployment taxes are also part of those nasty payroll taxes Walker is advocating cutting or removing as part of his “tax cut” solution.

How many people would argue that now is the time to cut unemployment benefits? Apparently, Scott Walker. I wonder how those 1,100 people who are now forced to draw the unemployment checks they paid for through payroll taxes would respond to a plan to cut those benefits they’re now reliant on until they can find another job?

While Walker may envision his “one solution for every problem” approach to fixing the problems facing America and Milwaukee today as a positive for his run at Governor this year, the fact is that the solutions required are more complex than a simplistic campaign slogan like “tax cuts!“.

The unfortunate news from Vliet Street, just blocks from my house, today only reinforces that point.

Top Milwaukee Business Leaders Agree: Obama’s Stimulus Plan Will Work

January 22nd, 2009

Milwaukee’s most influential leaders agree: the Obama stimulus plan will work and help Milwaukee.

The BizTimes has a collection of thoughts from some of Milwaukee’s most influential business leaders that may surprise some.

The Obama economic stimulus plan will help revive the economy, but improvements are not likely to begin occurring until late in 2009 or 2010.

That was the consensus viewpoint among the top executives of some of the Milwaukee region’s most significant companies, according to an informal survey by Greater Milwaukee Committee president Julia Taylor.

Isn’t it amazing how common sense prevails when politically motivated “principles” aren’t involved?

Surge in Library Usage Felt Firsthand, A Good Example of Our Tax Dollars at Work

January 22nd, 2009

The Journal Sentinel has a good story today about the increased usage of Milwaukee area libraries as the economy has tanked in recent months.

This is something we’ve been doing in the Cody household for several months as well. Why go and pay $5 for a DVD for the kids to watch when we can truck up to the Wauwatosa, Washington Park, or downtown library and check it out for a few days instead?

A strong public library system is an important part of any strong community. Times like this make that clear.

Libraries throughout the Milwaukee area are seeing more individuals like the Bonuses in these hardscrabble days of job and home losses.

Computer stations have become job-hunting sites as employers have shifted to accepting job applications online only.

Borrowing of compact discs, DVDs and books is booming at Milwaukee, Waukesha and Racine public libraries.
