Rally Tomorrow 12pm @ County Courthouse to Tell Scott Walker We’re Against His Anti-stimulus Plan

January 12th, 2009

If you have a few minutes on your lunch break tomorrow, I’d highly encourage you to join a number of other concerned citizens in Milwaukee County to rally against our County Exec’s disastrous publicity stunt to prevent Milwaukee from seeing any of the planned federal stimulus money. Below is a note I sent out about it earlier:

As you may have heard, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker is using the financial crisis to advance his own political agenda by publicly stating that he, as the top elected official in Milwaukee County, would refuse to seek out any federal stimulus dollars because it’s against his philosophy.

The only real “philosophy” our County Executive holds firm to is that of publicity stunts like this to advance his own political career!

Years of deferred maintenance, soaring unemployment, a crumbling infrastructure… We all know that Milwaukee County can’t afford this kind of stubborn foolishness when it comes to our future.

Please join myself, AFSCME District Council 48, Wisconsin Federation of Nurses, Wisconsin Fair Trade Coalition, Citizen Action Wisconsin and many others tomorrow at the Milwaukee County Courthouse for a rally to tell Scott Walker that Milwaukee County cannot afford to be left out of a national stimulus program!

Where: Milwaukee County Courthouse
When: Tuesday, January 13th 2009 12:00-12:45pm

Please consider taking a few minutes out of your busy day tomorrow to join us and let County Executive Walker know that the needs of Milwaukee County are more important than his political aspirations!

Scott Walker Backs off Opposition to Federal Stimulus Money; Retreats From Original “Principles”

January 10th, 2009

From the total lack of surprise department, County Executive Scott Walker is now backing off his ludicrous position of refusing any federal stimulus dollars. Now he “won’t rule it out” as long as the money meets certain arbitrary conditions decided upon by none other than himself. Naturally, this rare reversal of principles happened on the Friday afternoon news dump.

Publicity stunt accomplished!

A question to all the Scott Walker fans who couldn’t heap enough praise on him this past week because he was “standing on his principles!!”

Can you say you’re still standing on “principles” when your principles have conditions like non-matching local funding with a straight face?

As I pointed out from day one, this entire thing has been nothing but a huge publicity stunt for Walker’s 2010 Gubernatorial bid. Again, as I pointed out previously this week, I think it’s a largely failed stunt that was wildly miscalculated. However, the major media outlets in Milwaukee just couldn’t help but advance exactly what Walker wanted them to: that this was all about him and his political career.

They’re all wrong of course. What this should have been about is the residents of Milwaukee County who are going to miss the boat on our share of important and needed federal stimulus dollars.

2008 Was a Good Year for Blogging – Thank You

January 9th, 2009

A recent commentor on my weblog reminded me that I should do an end of the year traffic analysis for my site. I’m a well known data “geek” because I like to find trends in data and just get an overall idea of what, if any, impact what I spend a considerable amount of time writing about here has any impact “out there”.

The results were encouraging thanks to a year dominated by elections – both locally and nationally – and the fact that I carried through on a resolution I made last New Year to post more on my weblog in 2008. I also really tried to focus in a a few issues this year like mass transit and Milwaukee County politics.

While my site is nowhere near what the national blogs see in terms of visitors or traffic, it is encouraging to see that I’ve at the very least picked up a good following and most importantly I’ve been able to do that while focusing mostly on local issues, sometimes having an impact on them. All the while, keeping what is at times lively debate from going in to the gutter as it does on so many other weblogs, which I have all of you to thank for as much as anyone.

October and November were the most highly trafficked months of the year, obviously because of the run-up to the election. October saw 145,000 page views and November saw just under 135,000. November 4th, election day, was also the busiest of the year with 5,000 page views

Overall, I had approx. 1.5 million page views (not “hits”) in 2008, or about 128,000 page views per month, or about 4200 page views per day. As of December 2008, just over 1000 people a day are visiting the site on average, up from about 300/day back in January 2008.

The most popular posts in terms of traffic I wrote this year was also interesting to see. Some of the content on my web site such as the posts about the Sales Tax referendum and where to get Obama yard signs in Milwaukee were each among the top hits on Google for those who were looking for more information, so it was obvious why they were popular. Other content like the recent million dollar web site posts got a lot of attention from traditional media like talk radio and the other blogs.

Most popular of 2008:

Thanks to all of you who come back time and again, especially those who challenge me and work to foster a spirited and productive debate. Here’s to ’09!

Increasing the Minimum Wage vs. Tax Breaks for the Wealthy

January 9th, 2009

Anyone else notice that when Republicans talk about potentially raising the minimum wage in this Country or State that the whole “More money in the hands of tax payers” argument that’s often rolled out in defense of tax cuts doesn’t seem to apply any more?

Apparently “more money in the hands of tax payers” only applies to those tax payers who make more than $250,000 a year, and tend to vote “R”, and not to those who could really benefit from an extra $0.75 or $1.00 more an hour in earnings.

Slogan For 2010 “Walker for Governor” Campaign?

January 8th, 2009

“Walker for Governor: Working tirelessly to ensure that Wisconsin does not receive a single penny in federal funding for which he doen’t philosophically agree with!”

Or perhaps:

“If you thought I ran Milwaukee into the ground, just wait till you see what I can do for the rest of Wisconsin!!”

Did County Executive Walker Miscalculate Latest Political Stunt to Shun Federal Stimulus Money?

January 7th, 2009

With a stunt as irresponsible as he is trying to pull by saying Milwaukee County, or at least HE, doesn’t want any of our share of the federal bailout, it’s no wonder Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker now being roundly criticized from those like myself on the left in addition to some on the right.

He’s opposing federal funding for Milwaukee County for the sole reason that he’s philosophically against the idea of the government stimulus plan. Suggesting that any money spent by the government is an odd position for an elected government official to take, don’t you think?

Funny that just this morning on a local talk radio show, he was almost mocking the fact that “lefty bloggers” would slam him for this out of touch stance. Looks like Walker underestimated just how badly he miscalculated this latest political stunt, because it’s not just us “bloggers” who see through it.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker’s stance against seeking any money from a federal economic stimulus package perplexes foes as well as some friends.

Standing on principle in opposition to expansion of federal deficit spending is one thing, said Timothy Sheehy, president of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce. He, like Walker, prefers tax cuts to federal work projects, Sheehy said. But since President-elect Barack Obama and Congress are on a course to approve a massive stimulus plan, the county would be wise to line up, Sheehy said. – jsonline.com

You’d think some enterprising reporter for the major news outlet in this area would ask him if it’s just federal aid in general he opposes, or just the kind he’s received for his own pet projects in the past.

Regardless, there is no simply no way any responsible elected leader can act with this kind of impunity and selfish attitude that puts his own limited philosophy in direct opposition to the very real and very immediate needs Milwaukee County is facing.

Our future as a County is more important than the political future of a single person.

Whether It’s Rail or Roadways, Building Infrastrucutre is Expensive: Anti-rail Zealots Please Take Note

January 7th, 2009

Those who like to bash commuter and light rail can’t help but point out how “EXPENSIVE!!” it is in their sometimes admittedly biased opinions.

Building infrastructure is expensive, but it’s not just commuter rail or light rail that can cost a lot to build. The recently completed Marquette interchange here in Milwaukee, which I’m a fan of, cost $800 million to build 21 miles of roadway. That works out to nearly $40 million per mile.

Talk of rebuilding the Zoo Interchange on the west side of Milwaukee puts the price tag for that seven mile stretch at between $1.5 and $2 billion, or $225 million per mile. No columns from “right wing guys” at the Journal Sentinel to complement those that spare no amount of High Schoolish snarkyness when talking about the cost of light rail in other cities.

When the anti-rail zealots start screaming about the cost to build a new system from scratch, notice that they never mention the cost of building traditional highway infrastructure. While it’s easier to rationalize an opinion grounded soley in ideology when you choose to ignore the facts, it doesn’t make your opinion any less ridiculous when those facts are pointed out.

Milwaukee County Executive Walker Doesn’t Speak for All of Us When He Turns Down Federal Stimulus Money

January 6th, 2009

With the worst recession in our lifetime wreaking havoc on our already fragile local economy what does our increasingly comical County Executive Scott Walker say about any potential federal stimulus dollars for Milwaukee County?

“Thanks but no thanks”. How cavalier.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker says thanks but no thanks to any federal economic stimulus money for county projects.

Unlike Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, who sent the federal government a $599 million wish list, or Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle, who asked for $3.7 billion from what could be an $800 billion to $1 trillion federal shot in the arm, Walker said Tuesday the county and the country are better off without the spending.

The only federal economic stimuli Walker endorses are tax cuts, and he credited President-elect Barack Obama for recommending $300 billion in such cuts as part of a much larger stimulus plan.

Walker said federal aid for ongoing state or local operations would only put off the day of reckoning for unbalanced budgets.

Though he doesn’t categorically reject the idea of federal money going for local infrastructure projects, Walker said he won’t ask the federal government for anything.

“All we are asking for is ‘do no harm,’?” the county executive said. “I’m not asking for any new projects or things to be done here.”

Milwaukee County has some huge funding dilemmas, including $300 million in backlogged repairs for parks, annual shortfalls of up to $43 million in transit and some $300 million needed to rebuild its mental health complex.

“The last thing you want to do is put money in hands of government,” if the goal is to pull the economy from recession, Walker said. – JSonline.com

Imagine what you’d think about the captain of a sinking boat who would refuse the help of someone offering help.

And yet the local media continues to worship our County Executive and portray him in a positive light even when, as in this case, the ideology of Walker pushes aside what would be rational policy, much to the detrement of our entire County.
