Conservative Talk Show Hosts “Opinion” Once Again Contradict with “Facts”

September 29th, 2009

In the latest example of conservative talk radio show bucking that pesky concept of reality, WISN 1130 morning host Jay Weber spent a segment of his show this morning making the case that “Support for Obama Care is falling.”

Today the Kaiser Family Foundation released a poll showing that despite the consistent trumpeting by  the right and their spokesmen on the AM radio dial that support for Pres. Obama’s health care reform is losing support, support among the public for Pres. Obama’s health care reforms are actually gaining support.

The September Kaiser Health Tracking Poll finds that public support for health reform ended its summer slide, reversed course and moved modestly upwards in September.  The survey also finds initial majority support for taxing expensive health plans and imposing fees on insurers to pay for reform. kaiser1

Fifty-seven percent of Americans now believe that tackling health care reform is more important than ever—up from 53 percent in August.  The proportion of Americans who think their families would be better off if health reform passes is up six percentage points (42% versus 36% in August), and the percentage who think that the country would be better off is up eight points (to 53% from 45% in August).

Substantial majorities of Americans continue to say they back individual reform components designed to expand coverage, including an individual mandate (68%), an employer mandate (67%) and an expansion of state programs such as Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (82%).- Kaiser Family Foundation

Once again, conservative talk show hosts are pushing an agenda and trying to create a perception that the public is on their side. And yet again, you have factual information flying smack in the face of the disinformation they’re trying to push.

High Marks for Ken Burns “The National Parks” Documentary

September 28th, 2009

I rarely will write much about television shows or mass media in general for a couple reasons.  First, my TV experience is mostly limited to sports broadcasts and HBO original series (True Blood, Six Feet Under, Deadwood) and second, because most of what’s on the thousands of channels we are subscribed to is just plain junk.

So it’s a real treat for me to recommend the latest Ken Burns documentary airing this week on PBS: “The National Parks – America’s Best Idea”.

Here’s the synopsis from the PBS website (which I should point out was created by Milwaukee web developer and good friend Bryan Buchs):

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature’s most spectacular locales – from Acadia to Yosemite, Yellowstone to the Grand Canyon, the Everglades of Florida to the Gates of the Arctic in Alaska –

The National Parks: America’s Best Idea is nonetheless a story of people: people from every conceivable background – rich and poor; famous and unknown; soldiers and scientists; natives and newcomers; idealists, artists and entrepreneurs; people who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so reminded their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.

The first part of the series aired last night and will continue through the week.  I was able to watch the first half of it and was really just blown away by the quality of the production as well as the story itself. It really makes you realize that America is unique in how we’ve decided to protect large segments of our Country for everyone to benefit from, and how we’re all lucky that the people who made it happen had the foresight to do so.

If you missed the first episode, you can also watch it in it’s entirety (how about that for a change!) and free of charge on the National Parks documentary website above. It’s something the entire family will enjoy and really get “something” out of, which in true Ken Burns fashion, makes it stand out from everything else on television.

What Would Happen if “Badger Guns” Were a Bar in Milwaukee?

September 28th, 2009

There’s an interesting story in yesterday’s Journal Sentinel about the Milwaukee Police dept hanging out around a local gun store and pulling over some people after they’ve visited because the gun store in question is providing the vast majority of weapons used in gun crimes in Milwaukee. This, predictably, has the right in a tizzy.

Badger Guns, and its predecessor, Badger Outdoors, have accounted for roughly one-third of all crime guns traced by Milwaukee police in the past four years, the data shows. No other store in the state comes close to that figure. The next closest, The Shooters Shop in West Allis, accounted for less than 3% of guns traced by Milwaukee police during the same period.

A total of 1,880 crime guns recovered in Milwaukee were linked to Badger between January 2006 and Sept. 1 – or more than one a day, according to a Journal Sentinel analysis. - jsonline.com

Aside from the specific instance of “Badger Guns”, I wonder how this would be treated if there was a certain bar where people were continually getting drunk at and getting in their cars and driving drunk.

I mean, they’re both legal businesses selling legal products, right? The difference is that in the past, there have been bars which have been shut down because they’re constantly the source of the drunk drivers.

It’s a rhetorical question, but when two businesses are found to be the source of illegal activity, why is one shut down when the other is not only allowed to stay open, but strongly defended by some?

Key Changes for Milwaukee County Parks in County Exec. Walker’s 2010 Budget

September 24th, 2009

County Executive Walker released his proposed budget for Milwaukee County in 2010, and while there’s a lot to digest, I was able to look through the Parks, Recreation and Culture portion of the budget and have noted some highlights below. The proposed budget for the parks in 2010 is $13,869,004, which means a  $5,900,000 cut from last years budget. 133 positions will be cut in the Parks Department alone.

Here are some of the key changes the County Executive is proposing:

  • Fire 34 of 48 parks maintenance workers.
  • Close the Martin Luther King, Jr. and Kosciusko Community Centers.
  • Close the Noyes and Pulaski Indoor Pools.
  • Close the pools at Holler, Jackson, Washington Parks and Pelican Cove.
  • $1.5 million for a new aquatic center at Hoyt Park (About $5-6 million in private funds have already been raised for this)
  • Add parking meters to Lincoln Memorial Drive.
  • $200,000 to be used for compliance with Department of Natural Resources requirement to fix the Estabrook Dam.
  • Sell off the public land at Crystal Ridge and along the Menomonee River at 68th & State.
  • Approx. $600,000 for the golf courses at Oakwood and Brown Deer park.

I’m continuing to look through the budget proposal and will have more detailed commentary soon.

A Big Week Ahead for Milwaukee County Parks

September 22nd, 2009

It’s going to be a big week for the Milwaukee County Parks system.

Thursday, County Executive Walker will propose his upcoming County budget and parks are one of the many areas where big cuts are expected. Parks supporters across the County are hoping for the best at this point but planning on the worst.

Next week, Rep. Jon Richards is hosting a couple town hall style meetings in his district to get feedback on how the State Legislature should approach the funding issues for Milwaukee County Parks. If you have the time, I’d highly recommend going and making your voice hear. Details:

East Side: East Milwaukee Library, Monday September 28, 6:00 p.m.

Bay View: Bay View Library, Tuesday September 29, 6:00 p.m.

Finally, there is some big news coming from the Park People that I want to share but am waiting on a few details to finalize before doing so. One hint: if you like to play golf, you’ll love what we’re about to announce! More soon!

Video From Milwaukee Tea Party Protest, Crowd Size Again Over Stated

September 20th, 2009

Some signs from the anti-Obama/Government/Health Care tea party protest in Milwaukee yesterday… The crowd didn’t disappoint, and sure enough the Obama = Hilter comparison was there.

Aside from the signs, it was a decent sized crowd. The vast vast majority of the people in attendance were over 50 and white. At the height of the event, I’d say there were several thousand people in attendance.

Some people saying there were 15,000 people there are way way overestimating it. Sheriff Clarke’s office might have had a bit more credibility with giving an estimate of the crowd size if the Sheriff hadn’t been participating in it.

One Injured at Milwaukee Tea Party Rally, “Joe the Plumber” Involved?

September 20th, 2009

This is unfortunate.

A fight broke out at the tea party rally today in Milwaukee, at least one person was injured.

I had left before the altercation, but Renee Crawford posted this on her weblog:

I hear a commotion. I looked up and saw an angry mob of angry white men chasing an older white man with a backpack. He was yelling “I have a right to free speech too.” The crowd was yelling, “You should die. You’re not an American., etc…” They started grabbing at him as he kept trying to leave the event. The crowd was growing (eventually to about 30 people) and the man clearly scared and angry and being grabbed, pushed and surrounded to impede his attempts to escape,

The man traveled about 300 yards attempting to escape the growing crowd. The crowd was riled up and screaming en masse, continuing to chase the man down, stop his movement, push and pull on his and in general attack the guy.
Then Joe the Plumber joined the tussle. I kid you not. I have no idea his role in it, just that he was IN THE MIDDLE of the crowd. The sheriffs get there, I turn to look at Joe the Plumber and the next thing I know the guy being assaulted by the crowd is bloody on the ground under the knee of two sheriffs and being cuffed. His face was bloody, there was something about a broken camera and I became scared of the crowd who were cheering and congratulating the sheriffs for “doing a great job”.

Details are still coming out… Regardless of who started it or how it started, this is unfortunate for Milwaukee. I’ll have video of the event tomorrow.

Tea Bag Protest in Milwaukee Tomorrow, It’s Already the Largest Rally in History!

September 18th, 2009

All the big players in modern conservatism, Malkin, Joe the Plumber, Americans for Prosperity, right wing talk show hosts, etc..  will be at Milwaukee’s lakefront to have an intelligent debate about the future of health care in America.

…with their “Obama is a Nazi”, “Next time we’ll bring our guns!” and other associated signs in hand of course!

Should be an interesting event. Judging by how last weekends similar event went in D.C. I’m sure the organizers will be touting a crowd size like this:

To Get to Anti-Government Protests, Teabaggers Demand Better Government Services!

September 17th, 2009

Irony alert! Anti-Government protesters going to anti-government rallies last week demand better government provided services! Talk about a sense of entitlement! I guess the socialist public transit was a hit with tea party patriots…

The Texas Republican on Wednesday released a letter he sent to Washington’s Metro system complaining that the taxpayer-funded subway system was unable to properly transport protesters to the rally to protest government spending and expansion.

“These individuals came all the way from Southeast Texas to protest the excessive spending and growing government intrusion by the 111th Congress and the new Obama administration,” Brady wrote. “These participants, whose tax dollars were used to create and maintain this public transit system, were frustrated and disappointed that our nation’s capital did not make a great effort to simply provide a basic level of transit for them.”

A spokesman for Brady says that “there weren’t enough cars and there weren’t enough trains.” Brady tweeted as much from the Saturday march. “METRO did not prepare for Tea Party March! More stories. People couldn’t get on, missed start of march. I will demand answers from Metro,” he wrote on Twitter. – Wall Street Journal

Inspired by Rep. Brady, I’m going to launch a sternly worded tweet and letter to the State Department of Transportation. A few weeks ago, I was FORCED to wait behind other cars on my way into work using the PUBLIC highway system that my tax dollars paid for!

To add insult to injury, I was FORCED by the DOT to wait again on my way home! I was also frustrated and disappointed that Milwaukee used MY tax dollars to create and maintain a road where I was again FORCED to wait behind other cars after leaving a Milwaukee Brewers game several months ago. I will demand answers.

In all seriousness, it’s even more ironic is Rep. Brady voted against the stimulus bill that would have increased the amount of money for… public transit and the D.C. Metro!!

In Brief: Health Insurance Costs Rise (Again), Silly LTE’s, Emerson Switches Schools

September 16th, 2009

Hard to believe it’s the latter half of September already! Mexico celebrates it’s independence day today, not to be confused with Cinco de Mayo… Although I’m sure some clever beer executive is trying to work out a catchy phrase like “Drinko of Cinco” and turn another ethnic holiday into nothing more than a booze fest.

  • The rates people pay for health insurance continue to rise. In the last 10 years, insurance rates have risen by an amazing 131%. BUT EVERYTHING IS JUST FINE with Health Insurance in America. The market will provide lower costs and higher levels of service!!! Any day now!
  • Reading the letters to the editor section of the paper is something I enjoy doing on a regular basis as it can give you a good sense of where the community is at on an issue. Sometimes though, it’s just silly what the JS lets through. Take this from Mark Koenke in Jackson: “I checked my copy (of the Constitution) and seem to have misplaced the section calling for the federal government to be involved in health care.”. I checked my copy as well, and also didn’t find anything about health care. Strange enough, I also didn’t find anything about government being involved in regulating airlines, providing food stamps to the needy, building highways, providing educational institutions….
  • Emerson started a new school last Friday. We had been on the waiting list at Woodlands for nearly a year and jumped at the chance to get her into the school located on Bluemound and Hawley. It all happened very fast, but she’s adapting well and is loving her new school. She’s now officially a student of the Milwaukee Public School system. Exhibit #18,761 that I am getting older in a hurry.

Emerson and Carter Get Messy at Tosafest

September 14th, 2009

We inadvertently went to Tosafest last Friday and I snapped a few pictures of the kids enjoying their favorite part of the evening.

img_0159I think the marshmallow on a stick was the bargain of the night. $0.50 each, low mess, and high satisfaction!
