Sorry, Dan - I feel obligated to point it out when the untruths of the right begin to be repeated as the gospel. Al Gore, while implying that he had an awful lot to do with the inception of everyone’s favorite little fad, *NEVER* claimed to have invented it.Here’s a story dispelling many of the ‘Gore Is A Liar’ myths…
He ain’t who I necessarily want as president, but let’s not let the right-wing fibs become the truth by constantly repeating them!

Well, maybe I should rephrase my comments. My point is, the concept of Open Source is “Here is my source code, add a little here and there, make it better”, but I know plenty of programmers who intepret it as “Here is my source code, copy it and give yourself credit for adding a couple of lines of code.”

There’s an unfortunate phenomenon associated with criticizing the actions of an individual who constantly does the same thing that deserves such criticism: since it happens to frequently, it doesn’t seem out of the ordinary.

Dave, for the sake of bloggers everywhere, could you spread it out a little bit?

I usually one read Dan’s weblog, but today I feel compelled to reply …

“open source can be very useful for beginners” — you saying that scares me.
I don’t think you understand the point of open source software. The point is not … “here is my code, copy it.” The point is more … “here is my code, can we work together to make it better”.

When I create a webpage and you view the source, that doesn’t mean my webpage’s code is “open source” it simply means that you can view my source. There is a huge difference.

Actually, to be honest, I rarely reveal any code I use on my site because I know people who will not credit me for it. However, open source can be very useful for beginners (now don’t copy). I must admit that when I first started out in web programming, I copied other people’s code directly too and it’s indeed hard to resist the urge to remove the credits so it will look as it you did the code yourself.
