I wouldn’t say I’m an expert on “gender roles”, I just have a fair amount of experience in raising a family that stemmed from the time when Jenny was in graduate school and Emerson and Carter were newborns. For a few years I was “Mr. Mom” on top of having a job and everything else while Jenny got her masters.

Like I said in the post, it was a fairly rare thing for guys like you or I to do what we do even 15 or 20 years ago. They’re not bringing me on as an “authority”, just as someone who writes and talks about it (even outside of blogging) quite often and has a lot of experience in the subject.

I’m sure you’d be one of the first to agree that sometimes practical experience is more valuable than the academic variety.

The Mad Men reference was just a reference point to make a comparison and contrast to, and like I said, it got me thinking about the way things used to be.

On a personal level – very cool, Dan!

I don’t mean for this to come across the way it will sound written as a comment on a blog, but … when did you become an expert on gender roles within the American culture? Did I miss something? Is there some thesis that you published that I missed? Does this all stem from the DVD you received, season 1 of “Mad Men”?

I am trying to figure out why a show would bring you on as an authority as it pertains to gender roles in the American culture.

I could see if they brought you in to discuss park financing for Milwaukee parks or technology – two things you have extensive experience and good knowledge about.

What am I missing?
