In Brief: Super Bowl Wins and Misses, Silversun Pickups

February 8th, 2010 by Dan Cody Leave a reply »

Happy Monday, and Happy Birthday Alonzo Mourning who turns 40 today. Very quickly, congrats to the Saints on the win yesterday, boo to Madison Ave. for a subpar year with the commercials (underwear was the theme this year apparently?) but kudos for sticking to the twelve step program of weening yourself off of the kinetic typography dope by only having one or two ads with it this year!

Busy start to a busy day of a busy week. Busy!

But in the meantime enjoy one of my favorite bands, the Silversun Pickups.

Oh, and I forgot to say the Audi “green police” ad was simply horrible. I hope whoever the mastermind at Audi was who OK’d that one is brushing up their resume today.

You probably got offended because it was so true. It was a complete parody of the environmentalists in today’s USA. We all have friends like this – they won’t eat off paper plates, they won’t use plastic utensils, have to drink from the recycled material water bottle. As ridiculous as you may thought it was, it was actually a pretty accurate (sans the formal “green police” division) portrayal of the green movement.

As for the message of the commercial, it was great. People are getting arrested for all kinds of infractions, but the Audi whatever is SO environmentally friendly, the guy gets right through.

The Audi add, while doing a poor job of selling it’s product to the green audience, was roll on the floor funny. It’s going viral on Youtube. It’s funny because it has that annoying grain of truth in it. I’d say Dan’s response makes me even more certain. I remarked after I saw it (when the laughing had subsided) that the liberals will simply detest this ad even more than the pro-life ad.

Perhaps the most off target spot was the census non-infomercial. While it was clever, it actually told you very little about the census. Perhaps a follow up ad is in order. It could say: “Fill out the Census so that more tax dollars will come to your community. If you don’t, dopes like us will just throw your money away on more useless garbage like this ad”

I liked the GoDaddys for obvious man reasons. The etrade ads were ok too. Dodge Charger “Mans last stand” was not too bad. Betty White and the snickers ad got a few laughs as well. Not the best year, but not the worst.

I’ll be humming the Green Police song all week.

Where did that come from? I’m missing something.

I wasn’t “offended” by the ad. Like I said, I just thought it was a horrible one.

Alonzo Mourning, number 33. Former Georgetown star and NBA (Miami Heat) great. You know him Dan?

I liked the Green Police ad too, effective satire, most of the others were bland.

BTW, you might want to delete the “peldkostomi” post.

Oh, I know who Alonzo is – I was a big fan of his during his G’town days. Just seems out of left field to wish him a happy birthday. I must not know something related to the topic.
