Jay Weber: Poor and Hungry in Milwaukee Are a “hand-out crowd” Looking for “freebies”

June 24th, 2008 by Dan Cody Leave a reply »

Check out the synopsis from a segment of this morning’s Jay Weber show. For the 99.983% of people who have no idea who that is, he’s the morning drive right-wing talker on WISN 1130. In short, a less entertaining, more narcissistic version of Rush Limbaugh.

“Milwaukee’s hand-out crowd storms the welfare office for freebies.”

This is not only classless, but heartless, cruel, and disturbing on several levels to anyone with a conscience.

Mocking those unfortunate ones who don’t have enough to eat, or are looking to feed their children, as looking for “hand-outs” or “freebies” is sick.

The double irony here is that this comes from a person who spends hours a day talking about how Sen. Obama is “out of touch” or “elitist!” with regular Americans.

News flash to conservatives like Mr. Weber: Millions of “regular” Americans go to bed hungry every night. When they fall on tough times, they’ll do anything they need to feed their families. That includes weighing the shame and powerlessness that can come with relying on someone others against the basic human instinct to feed and care for your children.

I know, because I’ve personally been in that line in my life. We were never there for “hand-outs” or “freebies” or anything so trite as Mr. Weber tries to make it out to be. We were there because we needed some help to make it through the week.

So unless you’ve been there yourself, you have no right to judge those who are.

Speaking as somebody who HAS been there himself, I can say in all honesty that “poor” and “hungry” are the last two words that come to mind when looking at well-dressed fat people talking on their cell phones…

  2. Any average working person could easily fall onto hard times suddenly and without warning. Loss of a job, a healthcare crisis, or a combination of things could cause most of us to end up in that line seeking help for our families. Thank god we don’t have to rely on the likes of “gravelle” for help.

If I fall on hard times tomorrow are you really suggesting that I have to sell off any decent clothes and wear rags to stand in line for help? Do I have to throw away my cell phone to get some compassion from you? What weight limits would you put on your charity for my family?

  3. Smitty says:

    Dan,

Spare us the self-righteousness, I’d wager that half of those food vouchers will be sold on the street for cash.

  4. J. Gravelle says:

Actually, everybody in that line (shown here) is relying on Gravelle for help.

Gravelle worked from January through to nearly July of this year to pay the tax burden to fill the coffers being pillaged by those opportunists.

I’ll watch my mail for the “Thank You” card…

“J”, clever caption you have on one of the photos on your site, and thanks for proving my point. Five Milwaukee flood victims and 14,000 others wait in line for their share of your tax money.

Maybe next time you can come up with something more original than the “fat people on cell phone” quip that all of your right-wing heros have been trotting out over the past few days.

Smitty, same thing. Thanks for proving my original point.

  6. Sean says:

Wait a minute, weren’t those vouchers meant for flood victims? Please tell me that you’re not so naive as to think that the majority of those people were actual victims of the recent flooding?!?

This is another beautiful example of no accountability from government “do goodism”, and money that was intended for flood victims is never going to reach those that were actually effected…… Where’s the outrage for that?

Oh, and the argument that “So unless you’ve been there yourself, you have no right to judge those who are.” is……well DUMB.

  7. Is this the only group of people in the state that has lined up for flood aid? Have these right wingers second guessed anyone else’s need for aid? How many of them have examined pics of people recieving aid in Waukesha? How many did a fashion check of people seeking aid elsewhere in the state? Did they check to see if they have (gasp!)a cell phone? Did they do a weight check of everyone in those lines??? Why the solitary focus on central city Milwaukee victims?

  8. warmmidwest says:

Yes, focus on the poor, people who stand in line at 5 am for food. They’re the real culprits of taxpayer fraud, aren’t they?

Ignore the millions of dollars unaccounted for in Iraq.

Ignore the federal employees with taxpayer charge cards during Katrina who bought designer purses, just create propaganda that blames the poor instead.

It’s easier to gain the attention of vile, shameless people like the posters here, easier to conquer and divide then address the real problem.

And don’t worry, that fatcat Sensenbrenner will save you!

  9. Daniel Cody says:

Sorry Sean, but I stand by my statement.

You and people like right-wing talk radio hosts can speculate all you want, but unless you’ve ever been in a situation where you had to choose between feeding your kids and standing in line for assistance, you have no idea what it’s like.

  10. Sean says:

So if someone doesn’t have children, they can never comment, intelligently, about how children should be raised? Just because someone has not experienced a particular sitauatin doesn’t mean that they can’t 1) give their opinion, and 2) that opinion be a more accurate reflection of what is actually transpiring, ie: people looking for a free stuff, that was set aside for flood victims. T
heir are MANY places around the area that have food for poor people. To not see this for what it is (and it’s not speculation) victims (flood) being victimized again. I’ll ask the question again, where’s the outrage for that?

  11. Smitty says:

    warmmidwest,

“…vile, shameless people” Now look who’s being judgemental, pot meet kettle.

Meanwhile genuine flood victims are being vicitimized by phony flood victims who have no claim on money that was intended for the victims of a natural disaster.

BTW. You can always conquer and divide but not always divide and conquer. Get your cliches right.

  12. Zach W. says:

Smitty, are you trying to assert that the folks who were standing in line here in Milwaukee in hopes of getting free food vouchers for flood victims weren’t in fact flood victims?
