It would seem odd that Milwaukee County’s top elected official would be trying to interject himself into a State issue like the purchase of land for public use in another County, but for Scott Walker, it’s always about the next election. In this case, the one for Governor that he hopes to try for again.
The proposed state purchase of the Rainbow Springs resort property “is outrageous,” given the state’s financial woes, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker said today.
The state can’t afford the $10.8 million price, even if it comes from money set aside in the state Stewardship Fund, Walker said. The state Department of Natural Resources announced the purchase plan Wednesday, which needs the approval of the Legislature and Gov. Jim Doyle.
Poor Walker. With talk about former state GOP chair Rick Graber, who’s now the ambassador to the Czech Republic, possibly thinking about running for Governor in 2010 heating up, it makes sense that Walker is desperately trying to inject himself into issues relating to the State. He’s probably looking to avoid the same fate that befell him in 2006 when former Congressman Mark Green stole his dream of becoming the GOP candidate for Governor by having more experience, more name ID, and a better record among the GOP base.
The one thing Scott Walker doesn’t want right now is a strong candidate on the GOP side stealing his chance at becoming the GOP candidate for Governor in 2010.
Expect to see more of this in the coming years as Walker is more or less rendered irrelevant by a stronger County Board and he continues to pursue his campaign for Governor to the determent of those of us who live in Milwaukee County.
It’s not like he doesn’t have enough to deal with here in Milwaukee or anything.
