Milwaukee County Sells (Former) County Grounds to UW Milwaukee

Today was the ceremonial signing over of the County Grounds land to UW Milwaukee in the parking lot of the County Parks administration building. There was a good crowd in attendance, mostly those who had something to do with making it happen or voted for it.

Even usual political foes were all smiles and handshakes today as they came together to celebrate their – for the time being – mutal success. Sen. Jim Sullivan also made a good point that it was a rare thing for city, county and state elected officials to agree on something, much less get it done.

Signing of County Grounds to UW Milwaukee

I talked to a few high level folks within UW Milwaukee and it’s foundation after the event and the closing of the sale will take place at the end of 2009 or first thing in 2010.

Sigh. When I was growing up, I used to live close to the County grounds. Used to go to Hoyt Park, go swimming and then throw rocks at the trains. When I ran cross country for Tosa East, I ran the County grounds, from the Village through the County parkway to Watertown Plank Road, past Hansen Golf Corse. Back then, it was the golf course and Camp Wil-O-Way. And now, who knows what is all there? On the other side of Swan, it was open space and the old county buildings with some rent a gardens.
I think when I come back to Wisconsin next year, I think I will be quite disappointed.
