Red Hat Enterprise 4 Out Today
Red Hat announced the newest version of their flagship Linux distribution today RHE (Red Hat Enterprise) 4.
This is more geared towards companies that need specific application support for things like Oracle or for those who need phone support, so it doesn’t affect the average Linux user that much. It’s nice to see they’ve got the latest major kernel version (2.6.9) in there now though, and some other nice features as well:
- Improvements to the ext3 filesystem
- LVM (logical volume manager) updates and improvements
- Better multi-processor support
- Security Enhanced Linux support
I’ve been using RHE 3 in a few spots for the past year or so and have been pretty impressed in terms of an ‘easy to use’ enterprise level Linux distro. Hopefully I can get a machine with the new version soon to test it out as well, since the price of around $1,500 is a bit much for me :)
s’okay though. You can always try out CentOS, Whitebox Linux, or any of the other clones of RHES.
They work great with a little minor tweeking.
Many How-To’s are available for getting Oracle to run.
i upgraded my workstation to RHEL 4 yesterday, but ran into some trouble getting the Nvidia drivers for my nvidia card to update, so X was hosed for a while. Everything’s running smooth so far, but no real noticable improvments that are obvious….
um, why don’t you just check out centos
free rh enterprise, they just strip out the redhat words.
Seriously, it’s very nice and I only have one complaint that we just ran into today. If you get the disc really busy, you can cause nasty things to happen with iowait…ugh, not cool
didn’t see the above centos comment
