Daniel Cody - “Left on the Lake”

This phrase was coined during the Gulf War in the early 90’s and was meant to convey an absolute certainty that the millions of pounds of bombs the Allied forces were dropping on Iraq during that time had a focused target, nearly void of death.

It was a bit easier for many American’s to accept a war, and the bombing that came with it, at that time knowing that the US military, and it’s associated Allied Forces, were doing everything they could to prevent massive losses of life. The pictures we saw on the evening news of another laser guided bomb homing in on it’s target advanced the collective belief that we were somehow fighting a just and compasionate war that only seemed to blow up bunkers, never people.

But as anyone who’s ever been in war can tell us, it is never compasionate or without loss. It’s death and dirt and everything that makes your stomach turn. But we didn’t see that on CNN over 10 years ago.

Here’s an example of just how ’surgical’ our strikes were last time. I don’t recall these kind of images being broadcast on the evening news back then.

With the continued rhetoric of our administration and their manifest destiny type principle’s of American Imperialism concerning Iraq and it’s affairs, get ready for more of the same. It’s not so ‘Surgical’ when the carnage is viewed from up close, instead of the tip of a laser guided bomb is it?
