Rudy Outpolls Tommy In Wisconsin & Other Bad News for Republicans

Published by Daniel Cody at 10:44 am under Politics

Terrible news for Republicans in the latest poll of Wisconsin (likely) voters:

11. Who is your choice for the Republican Presidential nomination in 2008? (Republicans only)
Rudy Giuliani 26%
Tommy Thompson 22%
John McCain 15%
Newt Gingrich 8%
Mitt Romney 6%

When “TOMMY!” is polling behind anyone in Wisconsin - where he holds Reaganesque reverence among the faithful - it’s bad bad news for his Presidential hopes.

Even more amazing to me is the fact that one quarter of self-identified Wisconsin Republicans would prefer a pro-choice, pro-gay marriage, handgun regulating, twice divorced nominee for President. Or maybe they just don’t know all that about Rudy yet.

It’s also pretty clear from the poll that Wisconsinite’s have had it with George W. Bush:

1. Do you approve or disapprove of President Bush’s overall job performance?
Approve 27%
Disapprove 62%
Undecided 11%

2. Do you approve or disapprove of President Bush’s handling of the economy?
Approve 33%
Disapprove 58%
Undecided 9%

“Or maybe they just don’t know all that about Rudy yet.”

While that may be true, what they DO know about the man is what matters at this stage of the game. Sure, Tommy’s a local boy, but if you played the “tell me the first thing that pops into your head when I say ____” game, it’s Rudy - not Tommy - who benefits politically from the following kinds of images forever seared into our brains:

Thrice Divorced, by the way. Though it’s easy to see why anyone might forget the first wife of Rudy. She was his cousin, after all.

    Weird.

As a conservative friend pointed out to me last night, it was his 2nd cousin!!!

    That makes a difference obviously.

“Values voters”, just like everything else from conservatives in the past 15 years, is nothing more than a bunch of BS.

BTW Les, does that picture make Sen. Clinton “America’s Senator?”

Hardly. She wasn’t the one walking towards the Trade Towers AS THEY BURNED, which is what I was trying to get at. Rudy was. When people see images like the one I linked to, they’re reminded of Giuliani’s poise on the day the attacks actually occurred. That’s extremely important, ESPECIALLY to the yellow ribbon folks.
