Spin of the Day

Published by Daniel Cody at 8:26 am under Politics

Wow, after watching Whitehouse press breifings for the past year, I thought I’d seen it all when it came to spin, but Bush administration advisor Karen Hughes just threw me a curveball this morning..

Bush has some new TV ads going out today, and a few of them show Sept. 11 footage from the WTC while the voiceover congratulates the prez. for being such a great leader after the terrorist attacks. Naturally, a lot of people who were personally affected by those attacks aren’t happy:

“It’s as sick as people who stole things out of the place,” said Firefighter Tommy Fee of Queens Rescue Squad 270. “The image of firefighters at ground zero should not be used for this stuff, for politics.” - Cnn.com

“But to show the horror of 9/11 in the background, that’s just some advertising agency’s attempt to grab people by the throat.” - Cnn.com

Karen comes to the defense of Bush and the ads with this zinger:

“I can understand why some Democrats might not want the American people to remember the great leadership and strength the president and first lady Laura Bush brought to our country in the aftermath of that” - Cnn.com

The people involved with Sept. 11 are angry about the tradgedy being politicized, and she… politicizes it!! By protraying the backlash as some sort of Democratic strategy, she pretty much throws the concerns of people out the window. Karen then finishes up by changing the topic from ‘Ad backlash’ to ‘Well the LIBERALS are just ticked off that Bush is such a huge leader.. Remember him being such a great leader and how he helped us all feel better in the hours after the attacks from the saftey of an undisclosed bomb shelter in Nebraska? Forget that you don’t have a job, remember how scared you were!!’

That, folks, is great spin. Way to go Karen! Expect to see every issue spun like this in the next eight months. Every question about Bush’s failure as president will be answered with similar lines about what a great leader he was after Sept. 11.

    Miriam,

What would you have done? He was in front of school children and nobody knew what was going on. It’s easy to say he should have done this or that now because we know all the facts, but at the time ….
