Just read an article in the Army Times about this. Turns out, the reporter RECANTED his statement that he put up the soldier to it, and that it WAS ALL the soldier’s idea. Too bad that came out a little late.

Completely unrelated topic…

So I’m scrolling through some of your old archives, Daniel, and I happened upon a fantastic “Geek Test” from 2001. I’m very sad to report that apparently I’m only 18% “geek”.

I feel so unworthy! Do I still get to be in the club? Do I at least score brownie geek points by calling you “Daniel”, or at the very least an extra percentage point or two for actually fessing up to the fact I’m going through posts that are over three years old?

Jimmy - I know I know I know … and Runny left to a standing ovation … yada yada yada. Anywho… I guess I’m trying to express to Dan why people, myself included, have given Rummy the benefit of the doubt up until this point.

I’ll be clear - I don’t doubt the validity of the question.

That reporter didn’t sneak in, he was embedded in the unit (278th Regimental Combat Team) of the soldier who asked the question. He had written two other stories about the issue in his local paper, but the issue of unarmored vehicles didn’t get picked up nationally until the soldier himself asked!!!

Obviously the question isn’t invalid when SO many other troops cheer after the guy asks his question that Rumsfeld has to ask the soldier to repeat the question because the roar of the cheering drowned out the original question!!

Rumsfeld should have been canned a LONG time ago.

Here is what I think is happening …

Prior to Rummy’s latest missteps, if you criticized him, you criticized the soldiers. Not directly, but they were seenas one in the same. After his last two missteps (not signing the death letters and answering the question from the “soldier” actually a reporter snuck in and put him up to it, but that’s another debate) you can now criticize Rummy without it being a criticism of the troops. So, people are now saying what they wanted to say for the last ‘n’ months.
