    Dan,

You won’t get shut out if you come to my neighborhood and shoot the deer that live in the local park and dine on my perennials. Last week I had one one of the biggest bucks I’ve seen courting a doe in my backyard. My neighbor was out with a camera trying to catch the action, fortunately the buck ignored him.

I lived here for 23 years but its only in the past several that the deer population has exploded.

  2. Dan Cody says:

Do you live along menomonee river parkway? If so I know the buck you’re talking about. I almost hit one on the way to Mayfair a few weeks ago

I’m near Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa (between Bluemound and 115th St.) there’s woods and water nearby and plenty of tasty gardens in the neighbothood. A couple of weeks ago, in the evening, I was driving west on Bluemound near the entrance to UPS when a herd of eight deer trotted across the road.

    Good luck getting Bambi’s mom!

Oh, crap, it posted before I wanted it to.
Anyways, I hope you get the critters that killed 2 of my cars up by Wisconsin Rapids.

  6. Jason Haas says:

We were walking through the Seminary Woods on Milwaukee’s far southeast side yesterday, and there not twenty feet away from us were two bucks and a doe. They seemed unconcerned that we were standing right there, not even running away when we pointed and commented aloud. Perhaps they know that hunting doesn’t happen in there.

  7. Dan Cody says:

    Success!

Two shots, one huge doe and one spike buck. Meat is back on the menu in the Cody household!

  8. Smitty says:

Good shooting Dan. Deer steaks, deer stew, deer brats….but aren’t you a vegan? I seem to remember you saying so.

Just saw this picture and thought I’d share it. We don’t get nights like this in urban areas.

    • Dan Cody says:

Thanks! It’s going to sound like a complete contradiction, but I don’t eat meat except for the deer I kill, process and prepare myself. I’m not a vegan, I just don’t eat “meat”.

It’s one of those stories that will have to be told in person over a beer.

  9. Mortified West Allis Resident says:

As President of the Park People, you should take it upon yourself to rid McCarty Park (right in the middle of urban West Allis) of the deer which chomp the vegetation and/or the icky, over-fed geese which foul the ball fields.

  10. Anon says:

What a joke you are! I thought all you liberals were against anyone owning guns, especially yourself! And now you’re trying to claim you actually go hunting?? Whatever.
Typicaly liberal bull*hit. The only thing you’ve probably ever shot is a nerf gun. Leave the hunting to real men and go back to raising taxes!

    • Jill says:

What a joke you are! You don’t even have a real name! Or a brain?? Whatever.

Typical idiot bull*shit. The only thing you’ve probably ever helped is yourself, to another trip at the buffet. Leave the commenting to real people with vocabularies and go back to fantasizing about Sarah Palin before all the kids!

    • Dan Cody says:

I’ll be sure to take advice about what it takes to be a ‘real man’ from someone who posts anonymously to a weblog, thanks.

For the record, I also own a nerf gun in addition to several other rifles and shotguns I use for hunting.

Get over the “liberal” and “conservative” labels and realize that hunting is an American tradition that transcends ideology as well as your obviously limited understanding of who I am or what I believe personally. The rest of your comment isn’t really worth responding to.

    • The Family Guy says:

Not only nasty, and way off topic, but pointless as well. I hate trolls.

  11. Smitty says:

    Dan,

Limiting your meat consumption to deer that you kill kind of makes sense. I can’t argue with your decision although a genuine vegan would. Obviously, deer hunting means a lot to you, I suspect you’ve been doing it for a long time.

    • The Family Guy says:

I’d love to go out hunting, but, unfortunately for me, I am the opposite of you, Dan. I just never liked the taste of venison. I wish I did, as hunting sounds like quite a fun and challenging endeavor… I would just hate to kill a deer that I did not intend to eat.

Well, except for the big buck that comes into my yard, wrecks my trees, and has a gourmet meal on my corn, beans, and squash. Him, I could mount on my wall.

  12. dmrsilva says:

Dan, you know me from my previous posts as a Conservative, so PLEASE, don’t think that all conservatives are like Anon. While I’m not a hunter, I don’t see anything wrong with hunting, Liberal or Conservative.

    Great job, enjoy the venison!

    • Jill says:

Hey, whoever this is makes me appreciate you and the other guys – at least you have beliefs to back up your comments.

Anon sounds like the Fox News spambot-

      • The Family Guy says:

Well, nice job joining anon in the name calling game. Classy Jill. Looks like his attitude is not reserved by conservatives at all…

        • Jill says:

Umm, geez guys, it was a frickin’ parody, it was like a mad libs with “anon”s words. Don’t you guys get sarcasm at all?

      • Smitty says:

        “fantasaizing about Sarah
        Palin”, “Fox News spambot”

Jill rounds up the usual suspects and comes out sounding like the troll “anon”.

        • Jill says:

Gosh, I thought it was totally topical to counter some of those stereotypes about liberals with some equally ridiculous stereotypes about conservatives. Can I have a colored font or something for “joking?” The smiley faces and obvious sarcasm don’t work on any of you…

OK, for all you out there, I was trying to point out how frickin’ ridiculous this comment was. I left another comment which none of you read which spoke to the fact that I appreciate that at least the rest of you have beliefs to back up your comments, whereas anon was just a moron.

What the heck? Unless you all are really fantasizing about Sarah Palin, which I suppose would be ok except for that whole 10th commandment thing, it was obviously not aimed at conservatives. A word I specifically did not use in my comment. It was aimed at stupid people. You guys can’t be offended by that, can you?

          • The Family Guy says:

Actually Jill, you are doing quite a fine job of perpetuating stereotypes… on both sides of the coin.

10th commandment? Hm, I’ll have to go check it out in my bible. Now where did I leave that thing? Hm, must be out in my pick up truck under the shot gun. Yeah, I usually like to keep it there so I can bitterly cling to it and my gun at the same time while I despise people who don’t look like the guys on US currency,

            Please, continue….

            • Jill says:

Yes, and of course to fulfill your sterotype, I didn’t know what the 10th commandment was until I looked it up.

The flip side of the sterotype about right wing religious types is that all liberals are completely godless.

I guess humor is off limits in comments on this blog. I’ll make sure I’m completely sour-faced and serious from now on. Thanks for the buzzkill.

            • the family guy says:

No, I hardly think liberals are Godless, though I rather think that most anti-Christian types ARE probably liberal. I’d call that more fact than stereotype though. I’ve never seen “Republicans for Freedom from Religion”

Perhaps humor might seem funnier if it were not the harsh insults that conservatives hear every day. Many people, not knowing that others are conservative, often loudly issue the same “humor” and then chuckle at those evil conservatives. I know conservatives who work in higher education who actually have a secret lunch club so that they can escape the unknowing harassment they get from well meaning co-workers. It always amazes me that those who preach tolerance and diversity often have none themselves. It’s not always that funny when you are on the business end of it.

Perhaps you could start off with a knock-knock joke for practice.

            • Jill says:

‘cept for I wasn’t talking a bout you, I was talking about an idiot who was insulting Dan. Unless that was you. Which I don’t think it was, so let’s not even go there.

    • Dan Cody says:

Understood, and thanks. Moronic presumptions aren’t limited to one side or the other, and I would be the last to classify anons comment as speaking for “conservatives”. Because that would be, as anon has made the case so well, moronic.

      • Smitty says:

The DNR says the deer kill this year is down 25% so you’ve successfully bucked the odds.

What the reason for the decline? Weather? Smaller deer herd?

Based on my observations and posts on this thread I suspect the deer have simply moved to the suburbs— it’s safer, with better food.

        • Bruno Wolff III says:

I don’t know about safer. They seem to hit by cars fairly regularly around where I live. I try to do a good job of watching the sides of the road when driving around here at night. I either have my brights on or if traffic prevents that, I drive slower.
