Video From Today’s Appearance on “The Morning Blend”

October 6th, 2010

Good topic this morning on “The Morning Blend” about what parents do worry about and what they should be worried about.

A recent poll shows that parents are more concerned about their children being attacked by terrorists than being involved in a serious car accident.  The reality is that the latter is much more likely to occur.

Why such a big discrepancy between worries and reality?  Experts say parents fixate on rare events because they internalize horrific stories they hear on the news or from a friend.

Buckle those seat belts, strap on the helmets and put on life vests!

As a total vain aside, I realized after watching the segment later that this is the longest my hair has been in a few years and it pays to shave. HD is a not a new fathers best friend.

Good segment, Dan. People are terrible at risk assessment, and as much as we love to believe that we are rational beings, we are more driven by emotion than logic and numbers. With parenting it’s even worse, as we have an evolutionarily-reinforced urge to protect our offspring at all costs.

Great topic, and I think you can have a similar discussion about a lot of other areas of life (e.g., folks willing to give up civil liberties to theoretically decrease by the smallest measurable amount the already minuscule chance that they are hurt in a terrorist event — and meanwhile they’re twittering from their iPhones while driving 75mph down the highway).

What are your thoughts on tackling this problem when it comes to parenting? Education/awareness efforts?
