What American’s Didn’t Hear From Last Nights GOP Convention Speeches
I was thinking this morning about the speeches from last night’s GOP convention, and it occured to me that while they were fine speeches full of sarcasm and “zingers!” for the base, they were quite free of any actual content. So instead of focusing on what we did hear in the speeches last night, how about what we didn’t hear
What American’s didn’t hear from either of last night’s big speakers: VP candidate Sarah Palin and Rudy Guiliani:
- Anything relating to the American economy. The sinking dollar, rising inflation, out of control food prices, our massive national debt. There was literally nothing in either of their speeches about the #1 issue for American voters right now: the economy.
- Healthcare. Millions of American’s are uninsured or under-insured. Seniors are skipping their medication to make rent. Healthcare premiums that continue to rise by double digits every year while the CEO’s of those companies make millions and millions in bonuses alone. Healthcare is the #2 issue for American voters right now. There was nothing to address it in either of last night’s speechs.
- Other than the references to her son being deployed next week to Iraq, I didn’t hear anything about what is probably the #3 issues for American voters: Iraq. No mention of what defines success, when our troops can come home, or why the American taxpayer should continue to subsidize the Iraqi government when it’s running an $80 Billion surplus.
- Afghanistan. Could be wrong, but don’t think this was mentioned once. Considering it’s the central front in the war against terrorists and has seen a surge in violence, you’d think it would get a mention at least.
- Mortgage crisis. Again, nothing.
While I could go on, and it’s certainly easier to point out what you don’t hear compared to what you do, I think it’s telling that the big night for Republicans was spent making snarky comments against Sen. Obama, community organizers, and the media while no attention was paid to the issues above.
The economy. Healthcare. Iraq. Those are what people are going to be voting on and unless Sen. McCain talks about them tonight, you’ll have an entire convention leave Minnesota that can congratulate itself on delivering sarcastic speeches while wholly ignoring actual issues facing this Country. Lot’s of negativity, but no solutions.
In other words, more of the same.

That stuff will all be covered in the debates - which no one will watch.

The past two weeks were bare of specifics, but that’s to be expected since conventions have morphed into political infomercials and pep rallies.
The debates will be interesting and infomative.
