When addressing mental health & guns, let’s start with Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke
I'm glad we're finally having a serious discussion about the mental health of people with access to guns.
Let's start with Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.
The guy who runs as a Democrat at election time but kow-tows to Republicans. Who wears cowboy hats and spurs on his boots, yet reprimands his deputies when they are "out of uniform". The guy who sees himself as a "leader" but uses the language and debate tactics of a nine year old. He declared himself as accountable to no one and files lawsuits because he thinks the rules don't apply to him. He is the "shepherd" to the "sheep" in Milwaukee County. Clarke brags about protecting the public, but arrests fewer people than the local college police department.
I've said it numerous times before, but Sheriff Clarke is not only an embarrassment to the residents of Milwaukee County and the office of Sheriff, he is a bully who's viewpoints on society are so far out on the fringe that his fitness to serve should seriously be questioned. The latest example is this screed on a local Tea Party website:
Shame on liberals for exploiting tragedy once again in our country and try to use tragedy as a reason to take our rights away. Liberals are shameful.
We have to resist with the ferociousness of a junk yard dog, any, any attempt by liberals to make us less free by chipping away at our constitutional freedoms.
All the left is interested in is having the government control every aspect of our lives. Calling for gun control is just another aspect of furthering their socialist agenda.
All of these suggestions about the need for gun control are the mindset of sheep. Once the wolf is at the door, you’re helpless. Sure, run and hide from a sociopathic killer. See how far that gets you. You know where that ‘ll get you? 26 dead at Sandy Hook School.
You can read the entirety of his rant here. But the short version is: liberals, liberals, socialist, sheep and uzi's on every corner.
Clarke loves the limelight and part of me has always hoped that his ridiculous statements and positions over the years have been nothing more than a cry for attention.
But when you have a law enforcement officer acting out like this, it causes the same concerns about the mental health of the individual as it would if the writings were from a confused teenager looking to lash out against society for the perceived wrongs against him and exact some sort of sick payback.
While he'll get cheers from the predictable outlets for his rants, it's a serious cause for concern for the average resident of Milwaukee County.

I guess I’d have to question your mental health there Dan. Sheriff Clarkes letter is the voice of anyone who loves their 2nd amendment RIGHTS. Instead of looking at banning guns to make us safer, we need to look at how to protect us from psychopaths who choose to exact revenge upon society. Taking guns away will only change the method of delivery of said revenge, not the actual delivery. People have been killing each other for thousands of years, long before guns were invented. Instead of a guy running through the halls with a gun, it’ll be a sword, a bow & arrow, a homemade gun, homemade explosives, or attacks with deadly chemicals. You expect people to sit and be calm while you talk about taking away constitutional rights, and call people crazy who would dare speak up about such behavior… You sir are the one whose metal health I question. Apparently you don’t believe constitutional rights are something worth fighting for…
Couple things:
2nd amendment rights have nothing to do with posting armed guards at every school in Wisconsin/America.
About “delivery” or revenge, if these people didn’t have the ability to fire hundreds or rounds per minute they’re “revenge” wouldn’t be so ravaging. It’s one things to walk into a mall with a 100 round mag clipped into an AR-15 and quite another to walk in with a crow bar or a knife or even a shotgun.
I do believe in constitutional rights. I just don’t think that the 2nd amendment is the only one that matters. I believe that my “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” trumps your ability to walk around armed to the teeth with weapons designed for the sole purpose of killings lots of people really fast.
He is one sick wolf! All of us sheep better flock together to protect ourselves from this idiot. I can’t believe that he is held in high or any esteem by those who reside in Milwaukee County. Talk about a guy on a power trip because he has a badge, gun and a big mouth. He talks like the sociopaths he abhors. His answer to violence….shoot it up!
This article was effective in demonstrating why gun owners sometimes see a conspiracy behind efforts to restrict gun ownership. You maintain that Clarke has mental health issues that should prevent him from owning a gun, but all you cite are his viewpoints with which you disagree, his “rants” (or opinions), his cowboy hats and spurs. No evidence is provided that he is dangerous with a firearm, or has ever shown he will use one to harm others. You don’t like his politics or his style. So you’ll use Obama’s new-found tool to ban gun ownership by unilaterally declaring Clarke unfit. Thanks for the demonstration of how liberals see gu control in action.
Dear Dan,
You actually stated three points, not a “Couple things:”
In reverse order,
“life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” trumps none of the 10 Amendments as the Bill of Rights are part of the U.S. Constitution whereas “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” is stated in the Declaration of Independence – otherwise a testimony to our political heritage but only guaranteed under the ‘due process’ clause. Example: Convicted murderers can still be executed in some states.
Armed with only a six shooter, Adam Lanza would have still potentially killed any combination of six children and teachers you might imagine. One firearms trained teacher with a concealed carry permit and the weapon to back it up could have dumped a second clip of into Adam Lanza for good measure after emptying the first clip of ammunition to stop him.
The 2nd Amendment has everything to do with protecting the lives of individuals, their families and schoolchildren! Just last month, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg allegedly fired his armed security only to show up, today, at the Washington D.C. mayoral conference with… armed security. The president’s children, among the other elite of government, enjoy Secret Service and private armed security. Government officials ultimately derive their requirement for armed protection from the 2nd Amendment, a right not exclusive to themselves!
